Arena's Next Stage
Jan/Feb 2007
Arena Stage is embarking on a $100 million-plus renovation of its facilities, which will create a state-of-the-art theatre campus. The complex is slated for completion in 2009.
Philanthropists Gilbert and Jaylee Mead donated nearly $35 million to the capital campaign, the largest donation ever made to an American regional theatre. The couple have served on Arena's board since 1991, and have sponsored over 15 of its productions. Arena will honor the Meads' commitment and generosity by naming the new complex Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theatre.
"The Meads are true visionaries," said Arena artistic director Molly Smith. "Their gift will be a legacy not only for our theatre alone, but to this city and the nation."
The capital campaign received additional contributions of over $23 million from Arena's own Board, as well as several private contributions of $1 million or more.
Executive director Stephen Richard also noted, "Of course, we must acknowledge the generous support of the District, without which this project would not be possible. The District has made the construction of our new theatre a priority of the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative in Southwest, and has understood from the outset that the arts can be a powerful engine for economic development and neighborhood revitalization."
The complex has been designed to enable artists to live, work and perform in the space and will include multiple workspaces and artist apartments as well as three theatres: the renovated Fichandler and Kreeger theatres and the new 200-seat Cradle, which will be dedicated to American plays.
Arena plans to continue holding performances in the Fichandler and Kreeger theatres while construction of the Mead Center is in progress.
